Chicago Record Report: November 2024

[ad_1]

Chicago Record Report is a monthly series highlighting some of the new local music that has caught the ear of Reader staff.

Alkilith, Thy Dark Majesty

The new EP from Alkilith, the minimalist dungeon-synth project of Zak Kiernan, arrives just weeks after he helped organize the Great Lakes Dungeon Siege in Fort Wayne. Despite (or because of) its serene solemnity and antique air, Thy Dark Majesty is a shot of pure ambient bliss.

Blinker, Stinker

Blinker’s new five-song EP sets everyday musings to dejected piano ballads and loose, sometimes fuzzy indie rock. “Care” mocks the rebranding of mass consumerism as “retail therapy”—particularly appropriate for the holiday shopping season.

Cassius Tae, Moments in Desire

Rapper Cassius Tae released his first full-length project in 2015, but he still doesn’t have the profile he deserves. His new album, Moments in Desire, hits hard with stunning production and gospel flourishes, and his lyrics draw on his life experiences and observations in his characteristically vulnerable, straightforward style.

Annalee Koehn, Tools of an Unseen Hand

Visual artist, designer, and educator Annalee Koehn blends Americana, country, folk, and other rootsy styles on the new Tools of an Unseen Hand, and it’s a pleasure from start to finish. One track fuses the traditional “John Riley the Shepherd” with a heartrending take on the Rolling Stones’ “Play With Fire,” and album opener “How the Rain It Fell” sets up a sorrowful dance between Koehn’s husky voice with Jess Baldissero’s limber fiddle.

Meth. and See You Next Tuesday, Asymmetrics

This split release from Chicago metal iconoclasts Meth. and Bay City grind lords See You Next Tuesday proves that even an apparently ridiculous experiment can go diabolically right. The bands each wrote three songs, traded only the drum tracks, and used those as the foundation for their own material. The resulting album (which includes six additional songs) can stop you in your tracks with its frantic violence and lightless density.

Mother Nature, Caps n Stemz

As Mother Nature, MCs Klevah and TRUTH make eclectic hip-hop whose playful, bumping beats and impassioned lyrical delivery aim to educate and empower. In just four brief tracks, their EP Caps n Stems exudes wisdom and charisma with an open vibe that makes it feel like a casual gathering where everyone’s welcome.
