Auburn took home the Maui Invitational championship with a 90-76 win over Memphis on Wednesday, thanks to a standout performance by Johni Broome. Broome scored 21 points and grabbed 16 rebounds, helping Auburn stay undefeated with a 7-0 record.
The game started strong for Auburn, who went on a quick 9-0 run, including a 3-pointer by Broome just 22 seconds into the game. By halftime, Broome already had 15 points and 11 rebounds. He finished the game with 8 field goals on 15 attempts, plus six assists and four blocks.
Dylan Cardwell was also perfect from the field, making all eight of his shots to finish with 18 points. Chad Baker-Mazara contributed 14 points, and Denver Jones added 11 points.
For Memphis, PJ Haggerty led the charge with 27 points, shooting 11-for-20. Dain Dainja also chipped in 15 points, but Memphis struggled overall, especially with Tyrese Hunter, who had 23 points in their semifinal win against Michigan State but only managed 11 against Auburn.
Auburn led 47-31 at halftime and pulled away in the second half, extending their lead to 22 points with just four minutes left.
One of the key moments in the game came when Auburn hit back-to-back 3-pointers. Broome sank one from the right wing, and JP Pegues followed with another on the left wing, both set up by offensive rebounds from Cardwell. That sequence put Auburn ahead 39-19 and gave them a comfortable lead.
Auburn also did well with team play, racking up 23 assists and committing only 9 turnovers.
Next up, Auburn faces No. 11 Duke, while Memphis will host Louisiana Tech.
