Kent State’s football team hasn’t won a game since last September, when they beat Central Connecticut 38-10 for their first victory under new coach Kenni Burns. Since then, the Golden Flashes have lost 20 straight games, the second-longest losing streak in the school’s history.
While losing streaks happen in college football, Kent State’s struggles are particularly tough. They’ve played 11 games this season, and in those games, they’ve only led for about one quarter’s worth of time. Most of their losses have been big blowouts, with just two close defeats: 23-17 against Saint Francis and 37-35 against Ball State.
“It hasn’t gone the way we wanted, but we just have to keep working hard and focus on the next game,” said Coach Burns.
Looking at Kent State’s record, things seem even worse. In 660 minutes of play this season, they’ve only been tied or ahead for a little over an hour. They’ve been shut out three times, including by top teams like Tennessee and Penn State. And in their other losses, they’ve been outscored by an average of 32 points per game.
The team is ranked last in almost every major stat, including total offense, defense, and scoring. They’re struggling to move the ball and are allowing way too many yards.
Injuries haven’t helped either. The team has lost key players, including two quarterbacks, which has made things even harder for them.
Despite all of this, Kent State’s coach remains hopeful. “We’re playing for something—our ability to finish the season the right way and set the team up for a better future,” said Burns.
If Kent State loses to Buffalo, it would mark another chapter in a tough season, but they’re still trying to end it on a positive note and look ahead to the future.
