Gwen Stefani and Blake Shelton’s love story is one of those tales that feels both unexpected and meant to be. In a recent interview with People, Gwen opened up about how their relationship came to life during one of the most chaotic times in both of their lives—and how it’s blossomed into something truly beautiful.
Their journey began in 2015 when they were both coaches on The Voice. At the time, Gwen, 55, was healing from her divorce from Gavin Rossdale, while Blake, 48, was dealing with his own heartbreak after splitting from Miranda Lambert. It wasn’t exactly the ideal setup for romance.
“We were both a mess,” Gwen shared, recalling how their lives felt like they were crumbling. “It was chaos, everything was upside down.” At one point, Gwen even tried to shut the door on the connection they were building. “I told him, ‘I can’t do this. My life’s already too complicated,’” she admitted.
But Blake wasn’t ready to walk away. He found a way to reconnect through something close to both of their hearts: music. Even though he hadn’t been writing much, he sent Gwen a half-finished song, Go Ahead and Break My Heart, and asked for her input. Collaborating on the track brought them closer, even though they wrote it from different rooms.
For Gwen, that moment was a turning point. She saw how much Blake cared and how music was their shared language. Fast forward to today, and the couple, who tied the knot in 2021, are not only thriving in their relationship but also in their roles as co-parents to Gwen’s three sons—Kingston, 18, Zuma, 16, and Apollo, 10.
Gwen shared that meeting Blake felt like a miracle, especially after she’d almost given up on her dream of having a happy, loving family. “God putting Blake in my life was the blessing I didn’t see coming,” she said.
